@abdimarihotmarbun: In 1638, despite an imperial decree to completely ban Christianity from Japan, a Japanese Catholic preacher named Tõan continued to preach clandestinely in remote regions. He settled in Kawaba village near Numata, married, and had two daughters. Toan was a charismatic and renowned preacher whose influence was significant in the village. One day, however, he mysteriously disappeared. To this day, no one knows what happened. Was he betrayed for the reward offered by the authorities? Was he captured and brutally executed? Did he flee to protect his family from persecution? No one can say for sure. What is certain is that he left behind his wife and two daughters, whose fate would became tragic. In this desert of snow, << Where are you Father? Where are you >> should have said this two innocent girls. The two girls were held captive and tortured. After 29 years, they were released and returned to Kawaba village. Their graves, still distinguishable from the others, remain a testament to their suffering and hope. Countless people died to preserve the Christian faith in Japan. The true number could be in the several thousands. Many executions went unreported, and much remains unknown-names lost to history and martyrdoms carried out in isolated regions. Today, only a small portions of the Japanese martyrs has been beatified... By the late 16th century, there were reportedly around 300,000 Christians in Japan, a significant portion of the population at the time. Why did Christianity spread so widely at that time? One key reason was that missionaries cared deeply for the poor and marginalized. Unlike Buddhism and Shintoism, where people typically sought out priests, missionaries took the initiative to reach out to the people.
