It's not about her writing, he's basing his opinion on her Political Beliefs

The hate is 💯 politically motivated. No point in arguing with people who have their fingers stuck in their ears.

I have a strong feeling that the people that want to argue that JK Rowling isn’t a good (or great) author are speaking to other concerns.

It’s the nickleback phenomenon. People love to say nickleback is bad or aren’t good artists even though they are widely popular and have been making music for years, selling out stadiums. People say they’re bad because by doing so it gives them a basic level of musical street credibility. With JKs recent controversy it’s now seen as cool and a way to generate street credibility in terms of trans allyship if you say she’s a bad writer.

You are wasting alot of effort trying to convince trolls of something which is universally accepted. JK is a very good writer who has produced an amazing story that will last the ages.

You don’t have to be a good person to make good art. It’s not mutually exclusive

The only thing I disagree with is Popular=Good. This is cleary obvious if we look at Demon Slayer one of the most popular manga series has very surface level storytelling and simplistic writing.

Popular doesn't equal good. Popular is popular and good is good. If you want a truly objective take on whether something is good you need to remove the bias. Harry potter has a lot of movies, advertised everywhere, games, and merchandise. This reinforces the bias around Harry Potter and improves subjective quality. I'm not saying either of you are wrong or right. But OP might have overcorrected when trying to remove the bias. He might be biased himself by comparing it to modern fiction, while JK Rowling didn't have the giants to stand on like modern literature has today.

from a sheer writing perspective JK is VERY average. It's like a highschool level of writing on basically all aspects we can look at from an objective pov. meaning the literal skill level and application of the skills that go into writing. From a COMMERCIAL pov she is clearly one of if not the most successful author ever. But being a good writer and being a good author aren't mutually exclusive. Just like how Taylor Swift is commercially one of the most successful artists ever but from a level of skill pov she is also very average. Both of these things can be true and both are measuring different things. You can be successful in your field while not being the most skilled and you can be the most skilled while also not being successful

You’d think writing one story over the course of 7 novels would be enough to qualify somebody as being “good”.

It’s kind of fun to see this unfold. The “I am very smart” crowd can’t stand this kind of push back. They think the book they love is better than the book thousands love because they have a superior perspective. It’s a tough realization that they are not as special as they think (though they rarely realize it).

this still has a few issues imo. you're accepting the writing workshop rubric as the arbiter of good taste, but it is not a universal that the rubric leads to to good writing. in recent years, MFA writing has gotten lots of pushback for books that fit the rubric but are nevertheless considered not great. even if this wasn't the case, accepting writing workshops as the benchmark for good writing is still ultimately subjective because what they like and what other communities like is in some way arbitrary (a science fiction group will likely have a very different sense of what good writing looks like, for example).
popularity is still a flawed argument. it is true that the goal for most authors is to be successful. but is what the author considers a success relevant in the minds of people evaluating their work? we are looking at JK Rowling's books from the perspective of readers. whether she sold ten or a billion should not influence how good we think her writing is, which should always be the end goal for evaluating the "goodness" of an author. additionally, popularity as its own metric comes to flaws of pandering and lowest common denominator art. there have been plenty of books, songs, movies that were very popular at the time but have been forgotten because they were not (subjectively) good beyond their ability to appeal to a mass audience. Tony Orlando and Dawn were some of the most listened to acts of the 1970s and yet are totally irrelevant today. even benchmarks for what a great artist is are subject to this. Shakespeare and Bach are both now considered the greatest in their respective fields and yet both had huge shifts in reputation centuries after their careers. your counterargument for criteria here is good but still fails to an example you listed yourself - baby shark is entertaining to some, sold well, by all relevant measures was a massive success, and yet I think any understanding of "good song" that necessitates the inclusion of baby shark is misleading.

ok so what you are doing is mistaking successful with good, while usually if someone is successful at something they are also skilled at it but not always, in the case of jk Rowling she wrote a decent enough book to fill a specific want in fiction at the time it came out and it got wildly successful but as time went on people started peeling back the nostalgia and the whimsy of Harry Potter to see that it's not a very well written book, it's has multiple plot holes or dissonance throughout the story and is written in such a way that the world just doesn't make sense, which by all metrics, makes it objectively bad writing

the people who are arguing that she's not a good author are not doing so in good faith. they're making that argument simply because they disagree with her politically. there is no other factor in their calculus

Unfortunately there are no circumstances in which we can claim art is stance-independantly good. We can say it sold well, or it met a set of criteria that we believe is harmonious with other works we like, but its nontheless still subjective.

Mostly agree, but your “popular=good” point is very circular.
You took metrics of authorial success (entertainment value, cultural impact, commercial results) and then repurposed those same metrics to define goodness. You basically just said “popularity is the same thing as goodness” rather than "popularity is evidence of goodness"

Van Gogh was neither popular nor commercially successful in his lifetime, yet his paintings are now regarded as some of the greatest ever made.
