@crimexpod: In 1986, the brutal murder of 29-year-old nurse Sherri Rasmussen appeared to be a tragic case of a burglary gone wrong. She was discovered dead inside her Van Nuys, California, condominium, and for decades, the investigation seemed to have reached a dead end. But Sherri’s family had their suspicions. Their attention turned to Stephanie Lazarus, an LAPD officer who had once been romantically involved with Sherri’s husband, John Ruetten. Despite the suspicion, Lazarus remained a member of the LAPD as the case went cold for more than two decades. Everything changed in 2009. Cold case investigators quietly collected DNA from a discarded cup used by Lazarus. The sample was later linked to saliva found on a bite mark left on Sherri. Rather than arresting Lazarus immediately, detectives brought her in for questioning under the pretense of investigating an unrelated art theft. What followed became one of the most talked-about police interrogations, as Lazarus’s demeanor visibly changed when detectives began revealing what they knew about the DNA evidence. In 2012, Stephanie Lazarus was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to 27 years to life.
