@trippingwithderek: The hotel had to drill our safe open, and our passports were locked inside it. Nobody at the front desk could get it to budge. Their master key, their override code, none of it worked, so maintenance showed up with a power drill. That's not rare either. Hotel room safes are cheap electronic locks running on AA batteries, and when the batteries die or the board glitches, the staff override often dies with it. Here's the fix: on the morning you check out, empty the safe first thing. Not while you're packing the last bag, not on your way out the door.
