On September 16, 2026, Elizabeth Siders appeared in an Ohio courtroom and pleaded not guilty to new charges of sexual battery and unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. The indictment alleges the conduct involved a relative who was at least 13 but younger than 16. These charges are separate from the child-endangerment case involving the 16 children found at the Siders home in Hamden on June 30. Those children, ranging from toddlers to 18 years old, were discovered while authorities were executing a search warrant connected to a separate investigation. Authorities said they had been living in extremely poor conditions, and some reportedly had serious developmental and communication problems. Elizabeth and her husband, Gary Siders Jr., were eventually indicted on multiple felony and misdemeanor child-endangerment counts. Both also face the new sexual-conduct charges. After Wednesday’s hearing, Elizabeth’s attorney Thomas Stolly said he remains concerned about whether she is mentally competent to stand trial. He pointed to her marrying at 15, giving birth numerous times and spending much of the last two decades pregnant without consistent medical care. He raised those circumstances as possible factors affecting her mental health and understanding of the case; they are not a medical finding or a legal excuse established by the court. Her competency evaluation is still pending, and she remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty. What do you make of her attorney’s argument?
