It worked out for me, but it's not for everyone. It has to be the right choice for both kids and parents. Teaching is a skill that not all parents have, and some kids are better off socially in a school setting. Also, making sure you do get socialized as a homeschooler is an additional job that can easily get overlooked because it happens by default when you're enrolled somewhere else. It can be hard to appreciate all the pieces of that system until you are outside of it.

I’ve joined homeschool Facebook groups just to lurk about what these people talk about (my kids go to public school), and SO MANY worry about that they’re failing their kids in so many ways. Unfortunately the echo chamber tells them they’re doing great. Meanwhile the kids fall behind.

As an undiagnosed autistic kid, homeschooling from 6th grade up was amazing for me. It was a terrible situation for my siblings. So I’m pro more strict guidelines for homeschooling. Because there are cases it’s beneficial, but I also know many cases of educational neglect and abuse are hidden by homeschooling.

I just want to get this straight. Your argument against homeschooling is you should send your kids into public school where they'll be attacked, ridiculed and predatorized by other kids. So they build up defenses against being predatorized by those same people?

Everybody's individual experience is different. I home schooled my son from the 7th grade on. He's extremely smart, empathetic, and can strike up a conversation with anyone. I didn't follow a traditional school curriculum though.

I met a girl Frenchman year of college who was homeschooled. She lacked social skills and could not keep up with the curriculum even with tutoring. Unfortunately she ended up dropping out and I felt terrible for her.

As an audhd person,homeschooling would've been better for me than the education system as it currently is,however my parents were not good people so being able to be out of the house for school was still the better option for me. It sucks when these are the two options for people like me. I genuinely hope the education system becomes more acomodating to us.

Coping with mild negative experiences teaches kids so much. Homeschooled kids are sheltered from these experiences. I’m not talking about anything severe like abuse or bullying though.

There was a boy in my hometown who was only allowed to come to public school starting in 7th grade and not having all those years of socialization with other kids like the rest of us had showed in the worst ways possible. He couldn't handle being around other kids for the most part. He didn't know how to regulate his emotions and took typical childish shit kids would say deeply personally. He didn't even make it halfway through high school before he had a meltdown and trashed a brand new bathroom and got expelled. It was rough to watch. His parents set him up for failure.

I know kids very close to me that are a mess and they went to regular school. The set of kids that were homeschooled in my family are wildly successful so there’s that.

As a homeschool mom I’m sorry, I can’t imagine how lonely that must of been. Most of us are just trying to find a way to make sure our kids are getting a good education with a balance of time. I can speak for the homeschool families I know and the big issue a lot of us have is the use screens in the classroom. My son is in acting once a week, soccer, scouts and an attends charter once a week for a full day that’s run by our school district for homeschool kids to do extracurriculars.

this conversation is bigger than parents shouldn't homeschool because their not teachers. teachers aren't teachers either. this also goes along with being black vs white. 2 of the same schools in the same district but because one is black and the other is white, one is rich one is poor, the funding and curriculum is different and not in a positive way. most of the teachers get a kickback for going to underfunded schools just to pay off they college debt. they dont know the area or how to deal with different cultures. so miss me with that thing that parents shouldn't have a choice. I've lived with the whites and the blacks, the upperclass and the poor. im with u in regards to teaching them about companies and business because thats what the REAL WORLD consist of. 🥰

In my observations in my town in the coastal south, those who homeschool are usually part of a very large family in the logistics of getting kids to and from school is nearly impossible for the stay at home parent while juggling the much younger children who or not school aged. If that wasn’t the case, then the other scenario would be parents with extreme political religious are some other type of view of the world, causing them to shutter themselves in their families inside the home.. I guess all of this to say I’ve just never seen what I would consider a normal middle of the road household, homeschool their kids .
