If you heat a piece of iron red hot, dip it in water and pull it back out, is it cool? No. If the thermostat is removed, water flows too fast and creates hot spots in the engine. The water doesn’t have time to absorb the heat. Now, if you put a washer in with the hole the same size as the thermostat, then you will be fine.

Yes, thermostat is only used to bring engine up to operating temp as fast as possible.

you could end up with bad fuel economy and cold oil doesn't lubricate real well so you could end up with premature engine wear given an overcooling issue, if the engine and oil isn't reaching proper operating temp the oil won't do as a good a job to properly lubricate, you can get away with it temporarily but wouldn't recommend running it without one for too long

It depends on what you mean by safely...thermostat stuck closed causing the engine to overheat...take it out...just removing a thermostat with no problems why would you do that...Look at it like this...if the vehicle manufacturers for remove it safely without effecting the reliability of the the vehicle the would do it just to save the money...think about it if gm took out every thermostat for all their cars how much they could save...lits just say Gm pays $1.00 per thermostat over the millions of cars they sell they would do it just for the cost savings...but the amount of problems they would create probably would cost so many other problems

Nope. It will tear up an engine running it without a thermostat. With the water continuously flowing, it will become hotter and hotter and hotter. The thermostat stops that floor enough for the coolant in the radiator to cool enough to open to switch out with the hot coolant in the engine. Race engines do it, but they’re not constantly driving and rebuilt more often than normal builds. Picture a hot water tank but in reverse. If you leave the hot water on, it will eventually run cold due to only so much hot water in the tank because it takes cold water to be heated to use. Opposite of an engine. 💯

For those of you (all) that don’t understand the job of a thermostat. Here it is. When you remove it the gauge reads cooler correct? That’s not engine temp. It’s coolant temp. The coolant is not pulling heat from the engine block because it does not spend enough time in it. So your block will overheat and prematurely wear everything. T-stats are crucial.

That’s a yes no question. Yes it can but with modern electronics controlling everything it will not come up to proper temperature causing other side effects. In cars before the 90 it’s not a problem.

One reason why a car would overheat when the thermostat is taken out is due to it’s design, some engines have “2 coolant exits” one exit is to the radiator, the other is back to the waterpump, when thermostat is closed, it recirculates the coolant back into the waterpump, this is to warm up the engine, the exit to the radiator is blocked when its closed, when it opens it stops the coolant from going to the waterpump and lets to go through the radiator instead. So the thermostat regulates where the coolant flow goes, when its cold it goes back into the waterpump, when it gets hot it goes to the radiator, An engine with this design overheats because when the thermostaat is taken out both “exits” are fully open and not regulated, the coolant goes both into the radiator and to the waterpump. So a part of the coolant is never cooled down because it keeps recirculating back into the engine causing for it to overheat overtime.

Yes absolutely ! Thermostats on hot engine does nothing because they wide open anyway , its just a simple emission control device which works when engine cold first 5 to 10 minutes.
