@alastairjrball: The first time I descended into Tate Modern's Turbine Hall, I felt architecture completely rearrange my sense of scale. This is one of the most iconic buildings in London, full stop. Herzog & de Meuron preserved Bankside Power Station's raw brick shell and 99-metre chimney, turning industrial power into cultural power. That vast Turbine Hall made room for artworks as monumental as Maman and The Weather Project, the kind of scale you simply can't experience anywhere else in London. But here's the uneasy part: Tate Modern's success helped make Bankside more expensive. Culture revived the neighbourhood, then property capital sent the bill.
