Gwyn and Azriel have no stakes. Same with Elain and Lucien. If Elain accepted the bond, that would be it, no one would be upset and people would likely celebrate. If Az went and asked out Gwyn, that would be it. Again, no one upset, no consequences, no stakes. Elain and Azriel have to defy fate itself. When people say it’s boring or lazy writing, they’re full of it. A rejected bond plot line centering forbidden love and free will vs a story with the relationships having no stakes??? My "maybe-not-so-crazy 😅" theory on why some people just can’t accept the obvious setup for Azriel & Elain—& would rather root for Gwyn—comes down to a deep-seated distaste for soft, traditional femininity in favor of the usual "badass" tropes. People reflexively label quiet, gentle women like Elain as "weak" or a "damsel in distress" cuz modern media (looking at you, Disney) has conditioned us to only value female characters who are vocal warriors or pick up a sword. Since Gwyn becomes a Valkyrie, she fits that obvious warrior mold, making her an easy favorite for readers who equate physical muscle with actual character worth. In reality, strength comes in more than one form, & Elain’s quiet endurance, intuition, & gentle natured maiden archetype are just as valid as any blade. Modern readers have become so impatient with nurturers & soft-spoken women that they write Elain off as boring or passive, completely missing how complex & overlooked she actually is. Just because her strength isn't weaponized doesn't mean it's not there. Once we finally get Elain and Azriel’s POV and story arc, I think a lot of people will realize how much richer & deeper their narrative is compared to the same tired "two badasses" formula they thought they wanted.
