but there’s soooo much literature! especially with a topic like astrophysics for example, where the work is so large and complex especially if it’s only a third year dissertation as opposed to something like a masters or phd

My concrete advice as a MSc graduate from kings: 1: worry less about the literature, all of that you will deal with later. 2. Pick your topic based off of what skills you want to learn or enhance this could be coding, AI, NLP or something else that could be valuable for you to learn and use for your cv and experience when you are looking for employment. 3. what type of supervisor you want, depending on how you like to work as an individual, if you are more independent, structured, planned and so on, picking the right supervisor will make your project 10 times easier. 4. When you get the dissertation projects list, start emailing all the supervisors you want to potentially do the project with, ask relevant questions to the project and really get to know the supervisors work ethic based off of that, you will very quickly realize how much or little your supervisor will be involved in guiding you or providing you with the necessary tools to complete your project. I picked a topic I'm interested in and (without researching it beforehand) the angle I am looking at has almost no research on it. which is fun however it makes it so much more difficult to write my lit review because I have to scour for crumbs. it does mean I get so much more freedom when planning and conducting my study tho which is super fun for me

I originally wanted to do mothers and daughters and body image. My supervisor said absolutely not- done way toooo much. I ended up talking about fathers, body image sons and drive for muscularity! Ended up with a first! Still something I’m very passionate about but I’m still contributing to research!

you see the entire problem i have with not doing something im interested is is my life will be an absolute nightmare it’ll take me ages to complete it because i will be so bored researching it & i’ll end up leaving it till last minute & stress me out, id MUCH rather do something im interested in because then you wont hate researching & writing it & can actually make good progress on it throughout the year not just in 2 weeks last minute but i understand where u r coming from but this only works if you actually like the module ur doing it in coz i dont so i need to do something im interested in so my life isnt hell

This seems really reasonable to me but jn practice in every one of my degrees the clock is ticking and similarly with the students I have supported they have sometimes really struggled to catch up with the actual writing when they have taken a long time to choose a topic. It’s such a tricky one.

I'm doing my dissertation in law this year, my topic is on police accountability and the laws around it, it's not just something I'm per say interested in(it's more that I think people should be more aware of their lack of safety and control over the situation) it's something I want to make a difference about in the uk :)

Going into my final year (psychology undergrad), I had a meeting with my supervisor a couple of weeks back. We are both interested in the same type of studies / topics and I suggested an area. They told me to look up some studies around what I was suggesting and look at what’s missing, what type of study we can conduct that’s similar/different and be prepared that what I suggested may not be the exact study we do. It could be similar but something else might come up that I find more interesting to study.
