Bells—huge, iron-rung tălăngi—clash against their waists with each deliberate step. It's not subtle. It's not polite. It’s a battle cry against the dying year, a ritual older than memory, loud enough to rattle the bones of the earth. This is no kitsch performance for tourists with cameras dangling limply around their necks. The “uncheșii” and “babele,” characters from a forgotten folklore, charge through the village streets in a raw, defiant celebration. The masks—crafted from wood, leather, and wool—aren't mere disguises but avatars of something deeper: the need to cleanse, to cast out lingering shadows of misfortune. This ritualistic cacophony is a communal reckoning, a way to scream into the void that the past year has no hold here anymore. And yet, in an age of curated experiences and airbrushed authenticity, what makes a village cling to such ferocity? Is it defiance against a world eager to forget its roots, or a stubborn, beautiful refusal to surrender to time’s quiet erasure?
