my daughter asked how her cousin came out of the belly. I pondered a minuted to get it right. "The baby is in the uterus, it is like a room. When it's time for the baby to come out, there is a thing called the cervix it's like a door and it opens up to let the baby come out. Once the cervix opens the baby travels down the vaginal canal or hallway. Once it has come all the way down the hallway, it comes out into the world." She was 5, I gave her the anatomic terms but also terms that she could understand at her age. She said thanks and understood. I agree use the right terms but also put it on a level they understand.

Your story with your Bubbe reminds me of the story of when my mother had a similar talk with me. I was about three and had noticed the difference between my body and my new brother’s body. I went around, asking every man and boy I saw if they had a pe_is. Including my grandfather, who was a very old world, European Jew. He was so horrified by the question, that he actually said, “no.” I went running, in tears, to my mother, sobbing as I broke the news to her, that her father was not a boy…. My grandfather appeared in the room moments later, venomously angry with my mother, saying, “Everything? You have to tell her everything?”

Educating them responsibly like this from an early age also makes it easier to talk to you if anyone ever touches them inappropriately. Unfortunately in this day and age that is something we do have to worry about even when trying to keep them as safe as we can.

hey i have a super important question if you’d be able to respond so i can get the right information! i am a lifeguard and we get two different orthodox jewish camps coming in from michigan and indiana. the camp from michigan knew tiktok trends, had phones, talked abt harry potter, and knew what my love shack fancy stanley was. the camp from indiana didnt have tvs, phones, and was more stricter than the others. can you please explain this to me because they were both orthodox

as a jewish now adult i personally got most of my sex ed from my counselors at jewish sleep away camp. it was a comfortable environment to ask your like 18/19 year old camp counselors about topics that were hard or “embarrassing” to discuss with my parents and no question was dumb
