Egypt's National Food Safety Authority (NFSA) announced the implementation of a limited preventative recall of certain batches of infant formula produced by Nestlé in the country, following an official notification received from Nestlé Egypt, according to a statement released Wednesday, January 7, in Cairo. This decision comes after the Nestlé group announced the voluntary recall of certain products in Europe and concerns " specifically the Nan Comfort 1 and Nan OptiPro 1 products ", the Authority explains in a press release, specifying the exact batch numbers for each product concerned. The measure follows the detection of a potential presence of cereulide, a toxin produced by the bacterium Bacillus cereus, which can cause nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps. In a statement released Tuesday, the NFSA initially asserted that the "SMA" infant milk involved in the European recall is neither registered nor marketed in Egypt, and that no import or distribution license had been granted for this specific product. However, the Authority ordered the immediate withdrawal of the affected batches from points of sale starting January 7, 2026, the immediate cessation of their distribution, and close coordination with Nestlé for monitoring the operation, according to local media. The preventive withdrawal decided in Egypt is part of a " proactive prevention approach, aimed at protecting the health of consumers, in particular that of infants ", the same source explains. Consumers are urged to " check the batch numbers on the packaging, immediately discontinue use of the affected products if necessary, and rely only on information disseminated through official channels ," the statement specifies, reiterating that all breast milk substitutes sold in Egypt undergo rigorous inspection and control procedures, compliant with the strictest international health standards. The national traceability system ensures the monitoring of products in pharmacies and supermarkets. No cases of illness have been confirmed to date, however, and Nestlé emphasizes that it has activated its safety protocols as a precautionary measure.
