Lindsay Clancy must be held fully accountable for killing her three children. The act was not a momentary lapse. She strangled them one by one with exercise bands. That process requires sustained physical force and time [multiple minutes of continuous pressure]. Holding a child in that position long enough for them to die is not the same as a sudden uncontrollable flash. Whatever thoughts or voices may have been present, the sequence of decisions [sending her husband out of the house, taking the children downstairs, completing each killing, then attempting suicide] shows planning and follow-through. Mental illness can explain the presence of intrusive urges. It does not erase the actions or the fact that three children died at her hands.
She had already sought help. She was in treatment, on multiple medications, had called crisis lines, and had spent time in a psychiatric facility shortly before the killings. Many people experience severe postpartum depression, anxiety, or even psychosis and never harm anyone. The rarity of this outcome matters. “It does not happen to everyone and not everyone does something so horrible.” Treating the condition as if it routinely produces this result is both inaccurate and dangerous.
Framing the defense around hormones or “something every woman can go through” sets women back. It reinforces the idea that women are less able to control their emotions and actions under stress, while men who kill under psychosis or severe depression are still expected to face the legal system without the same collective softening. Accountability should not change based on the gender of the offender. Women are independent human beings. Measuring them by a lower standard of responsibility when they kill does not protect women. It undermines the principle that adults, regardless of sex, are answerable for their actions. Using hormones as a central defense only encourages the idea that women “can’t take care or control of their own emotions” and would project that outward while men are expected to handle the same pressure differently.

Anyone who kills someone is going through some type of mental problem. No sane person kills another person.
