Imagine this feeling. It’s December 2009. You learn about Bitcoin through BBS/IRC, then randomly find someone on Craigslist selling it. First thought: Sweet. Second thought: Wait. This is invisible money, and I don’t know this person. But you do it anyway because you’ve been around the phreaking and hacking community since 1990, and decentralization just made sense. And yes, this drug deal went down exactly how you’d imagine two hackers doing it. Two guys in hoodies meeting at a park. Paper wallet. Laptop. USB Wi-Fi. $25 sack of weed. 16,000 Bitcoin. Confirmation. Handshake. Done. Not one of us at that time knew how important of a role that played in the Bitcoins history. We proved the coin could be used as currency. Not just us but all of us nerds who loved the idea. Now Bitcoins white paper is framed and hanging on the wall at the NYSE. It’s hard to explain how bittersweet that feels. That frame shows how far our little stupid invisible coin has come. It also hangs inside the very machine we built Bitcoin to escape. And I have written that last part at least 3 times and each time a tear rolls out. It shows how far we got and it shows how wall street captured it from a symbolism standpoint. They cannot own the network. The blocks are still coming, we survived.
