If you do get section 8, SD county is one of the best places to have a voucher in terms of tenant protections & housing options. I was fortunate to get a voucher “mainstream” (I didn’t have to wait) due to being in a DV program back in NJ. After living in Jersey for 5 yrs with my voucher and seeing how I couldn’t afford anything with my voucher that wouldn’t have me living in the slums, I knew I had to leave. I had lived in SD yrs prior and wanted to come back so I ported here. I was here for 2 days and secured a furnished condo in mission valley. After a yr I was able to move into a 3bdrm 3bath house that was a new build and I have everything that I need for my kids here. So good luck! Keep applying!!!

I used to work in affordable housing in San Diego. Here are a few companies to look into: 1. Maac Project 2. Chelsea Investments Corp 3. Solari enterprises 4. Bridge. 5. Affirmed Housing. You can go visit city websites, for example “city of Chula Vista” look for departments, housing (affordable housing), or look under land development because sometimes they make it difficult for you to find. It’s all about the verbiage.

I’ve been searching but can’t find anything affordable. I need a one bedroom over 613 square feet. They keep raising the rent here and it’s not affordable for me any more even though this is supposed to be affordable housing.

I’m a former foster youth and have been on the section 8 waitlist for 13 years. I work full time and still can’t get into anything
I imagine the section 8 list will be opening up again soon. They changed the income requirements and many people are getting removed from the program, due to having higher income. Being middle class makes you poorer than low income you qualify for nothing and end up barely getting by.

If you look at the square footage in nearly all LIHTC AMI based apartments, the apts are on par with the market and even more if you look at the per square footage value. This is the Amani at 30th/Gunn—its supposed to be 500 sq ft by CTAC CalHFA rules; but, it’s actual interior space is 425 sq ft based on architectural plans—meaning it’s $4.42 per sq foot; Canopy in North Park (very nearby) has 1-bedrooms with 490 sq ft for $2100—meaning it’s $4.29 per sq foot. Wonk wonk
