@theargentgroup: Marc Lore didn't spend decades building Jet.com. He launched it, scaled it aggressively, and sold it to Walmart barely a year later for a multibillion-dollar price. Jet.com officially launched in July 2015 as an ambitious challenger to Amazon. Lore wasn't new to e-commerce. He had previously co-founded Quidsi, the company behind Diapers.com, which Amazon acquired for roughly $545 million in 2010. With Jet, he went after the market again. The company raised hundreds of millions of dollars and used aggressive pricing and a technology-driven shopping model to compete for online customers. But Lore's biggest move came before Jet had even been operating for long. In August 2016, Walmart agreed to acquire Jet.com for approximately $3 billion in cash plus up to $300 million in Walmart shares over time. For a company that had launched roughly one year earlier, it was an extraordinary exit. Walmart wasn't simply buying another online store. Amazon was rapidly reshaping American retail, and Walmart needed stronger technology, digital talent and e-commerce leadership. Lore came with the acquisition. After the deal, Walmart put him in charge of its U.S. e-commerce business. That turned the Jet acquisition into more than a founder cash-out. Lore had built an asset valuable enough that the world's largest retailer paid billions for the company and then gave its founder responsibility for helping lead its fight against Amazon. Jet.com itself was eventually discontinued in 2020. But financially, Lore had already made the crucial move. He built quickly, sold while strategic demand was enormous, and converted a roughly one-year-old e-commerce company into a deal worth as much as $3.3 billion. The right move wasn't building Jet forever. It was recognizing when Jet had become more valuable to Walmart than it was as an independent company.
