Nina Dobrev once said that in order to play Katherine and Elena, she had to take herself to a dark place that was overwhelming and scary; she even described it as having a split personality. She also said it was so demanding, as well as physically and emotionally draining, to play multiple characters at once that she no longer has the energy for it and would probably never do it again. I think Jenna Ortega really got to a point mentally where she believed she actually was Wednesday. Method acting is dangerous, as we saw with what happened to Heath Ledger.

"Acting" is just how we call it, the body doesn't recognize it as a temporal thing disconnected from the real person. For the body it's new behaviour in real life. So the brain even develops new synapses so the actor will most likely keep certain traits of the character they "played". That' why many actors struggled after long, intense roles, just like Jim Carrey (Grim), Heath Ledger (Joker) many actors who played Elvis Presley etc...
