@drshereencohen: Things my Autistic clients have said to me that blew my mind and shifted my perspective, part 1. Note this is not to minimize the very real struggles autistic people face, I can only address so much nuance in under 3 minutes, but I think it helps to recognize that difference does not always mean better or worse #autism #psychology #therapy #neurodivergent #autismawareness

first, I believe it's generally accepted to use Allistic as the term for "non-autistic". Second, my favorite autistic insight is "Society looked at the strong sense of justice and labeled it a SYMPTOM? WTF!"

I literally hate the “golden rule” for these types of reasons. Nobody is ever going to treat me the way I want to be treated. Others don’t want to be treated how I want to be treated. It doesn’t work at all for autistic people

I really see autism as a second language. Autistic people might not be fully fluent in their bilingual skills but neurotypical people aren’t even aware a second language exists. Imagine hearing a person speak English and Mandarin but you don’t know mandarin is a language and just think that person breaks into gibberish or noise making occasionally. You view that person as strange.

I definitely see how the neuro typical communication works, but its really inefficient, and so much is left to assumptions for no good reason. so I don't participate, its not that I cant, or that I don't get it, ive spent my life piecing that puzzle together to mimic it very well, but I choose not to participate.

I said this exact thing to a friend. “Can you tell me if I talk too much” she said no. I asked why not? She said “I don’t want to hurt your feelings” I was so puzzled since I made it clear it would hurt my feelings if she didn’t tell me. She eventually admitted that it wasn’t about hurting my feelings but her unable to tolerate the discomfort she would feel if she communicated directly. So it still defaults to the neurotypical preference

I’m neurotypical trying to understand the neurodivergent mind. This is the smartest thing I have heard. I wish all therapists were trained this way. Now I have a million questions for you!

Allistic people are so passive aggressive and we’re labeled the “rude” ones 🙄

yup. autistic person here. the golden rule doesn't work for us because not everyone's autistic. "well how would you like it if I corrected you all the time?!?!?" I would love it. I love information. that's the point of talking for me. gaining information is not a threat or a danger to me.

Long before I knew I was autistic, I struggled with neurotypical friendships. Friends would be so nice to other people's faces, but then say mean things about them to me behind their backs. I was also told I was rude several times for not being overly (fake) nice to everyone. I literally thought my friends were crazy, because they were rude pretending to like people, the talking badly about them! I also started to find it hard to believe anyone actually liked me and they weren't just pretending.

I couldn't love this more! Sometimes interacting with a Neurotypical person is like playing charades! I don't understand why I'm fucking guessing why don't you just say what you're thinking?

The "Double Empathy Problem" is so true. Neurotypicals are emotions first info when safe, autistics are info first feeling when safe. Each group interacts well among the same group but have issues crossing it.

We have a lot of anger towards neurotypicals most of the time. I find I get angry a lot throughout the day and it can be boiled down to me feeling like people are lying. 🤷♀️

Yes! I was diagnosed in my late 30’s and so many things looking back were straight up autism! Stating facts that made everyone else extremely uncomfortable, saying things to co workers who then tell me to change my tone and the list goes on! Now if I can just get the world to accept that I HATE making or taking phone calls and to just email me or text me, I’ll be so grateful!

I have ADHD and I'm married to an Autistic man. I was so drawn to how honest he was and how I never had to guess what he was thinking. There was never any guess work. Now we have an autistic daughter and raising an autistc daughter is both so HARD and so rewarding. Letting her have her own autonomy is literal magic. ✨

Yes, yes and yes! Humanity in itself is one of my biggest struggles (how and why humans treat each other) because the action vs intent is so inconsistent. Just say what you mean and mean what you say. It took me a long time to realize and to a degree understand that that is rarely the case and once I recognize that, work out a 'polite' way to deal with it.
