Common types: Tinea corporis – body Tinea capitis – scalp Tinea pedis – feet (athlete’s foot) Tinea cruris – groin (jock itch) Tinea faciei – face Tinea unguium – nails Causes/Risk factors: Contact with an infected person or animal Sharing towels, clothes, combs, or bedding Warm, humid environments Excessive sweating Poor hygiene or crowded living conditions Signs & symptoms: Itchy, circular/ring-shaped rash Red, scaly, raised edges Clearer skin in the center Burning or irritation Scalp infection may cause scaling and hair loss Diagnosis: Usually clinical examination Skin scraping with KOH microscopy can confirm fungal infection Fungal culture may be used when diagnosis is uncertain Treatment: Localized skin infection: topical antifungals such as terbinafine, clotrimazole, or miconazole Usually applied for 2–4 weeks, depending on the medicine and site. Scalp or nail infection: usually requires oral antifungal treatment prescribed by a clinician.
