Lansky :
Iโve mentioned this on several of Marcelโs posts, but coming from the perspective of a future integrative medicine doctor, I really hope someone close to him considers adding an integrative oncology team to his care.
Think logically about what is happening. If the chemotherapy appears to be helping the cancer in his stomach while the cancer involving his liver is progressing, I would be asking his oncologist some very serious questions before simply assuming that three more treatments will turn things around. What evidence are they seeing that suggests this particular regimen is going to control the liver disease? Are there other treatment options? And why is Marcel now so profoundly weak that he can barely stay awake?
Cancer and chemotherapy place an enormous demand on the body. Marcel needs someone looking at the whole pictureโnot only the tumors, but what his body needs in order to withstand this fight. His nutritional status, hydration, anemia, iron, B12, folate, vitamin D and other deficiencies, electrolytes, muscle loss, gut health, sleep and overall metabolic health should all be evaluated and optimized.
This is where integrative oncology can be incredibly valuable. An integrative oncologist or appropriately licensed naturopathic physician can work alongside his oncology team, evaluate deficiencies and nutritional status, support his overall resilience and help his body tolerate treatment as well as possible.
If Marcelโs liver disease is progressing while he is becoming dramatically weaker, I would be asking these questions nowโnot after three more treatments. His cancer needs to be treated, but Marcelโs body needs to be supported at the same time. Give him every possible advantage while he fights this.
