@ruxandramocean: The dead were not always buried with the assumption that they would stay dead. In old Banat tradition, precautions could be taken before burial to prevent the deceased from returning as a strigoi. A knowledgeable person — often a midwife — would prepare the corpse: piercing the skull with a long needle, anointing the body with fat from a pig slaughtered on Ignat Day, and placing a thorny wild rose branch beside the dead. Romanian folklore did not only tell you how to recognize a strigoi. Sometimes, it told you how to make sure the dead never became one.
