In Atlanta, Peachtree Street was originally a Muscogee trail toward an old village called Standing Peachtree. Super cool as a mixed Muscogee. I wish the history was highlighted more in ATL.

Your explanation as to why Broadway in New York City goes against the grid like it does has perplexed many of us New Yorkers forever. Now you’ve given an explanation that makes sense. An old trading trail and had already been established. Otherwise, why would they build such a complicated street that actually screws up the city quite dramatically in terms of traffic flow now. On this street Broadway continues right out of the city all the way up the Hudson River. I Imagine that was a trading route as well. I grew up on Broadway Route 9 30 miles north of the city. I only learned later that it was connected to Broadway in New York City.

So this according to an anthropologist from the 80s and 90s. but he was talking about Native Americans and not just how long we have been here. but through observation that we discovered the magnetic field of Earth. we did this through watching The birds. and we would follow the birds. the birds tend to follow the magnetic field. how they navigate. but following the birds is where we would put our villages or our camps in the beginning. because we noticed where these birds would stop and arrest in these points. vegetation and everything seem to have more life. more resources. so that's where we would set up camp. now all these camps and places turned into cities. all the cities that you know today. now he didn't go far as to say all that because of course it was a short video and they're only allowed to say so much. especially back then you can't run around saying Native Americans built everything

Thank you! This is, to an extent, utilizing English and social media to privilege Indigenous knowledge. It also aligns with a movement called decolonization and it contributes to an orientation of thought and being called decoloniality. What you shared also applies to much of the big cities and settlements in Latin America (including Canada as well) —and in most places where there is a stamp of the colonial project. I’m from Kalamazoo, MI and it was settled bc it was a Potowatami trading post bc of the Kalamazoo River and its connection of the 2 major southern MI watersheds, Lake MI and Lake Erie used for trade and transport. Some believe Kalamazoo means boiling water for the babbling waters of the river.

That has always been my thought about Natchez. Of course it is the highest bluff on the entire Mississippi river, so it makes sense that Native Americans would have found it and thought this is great to have River access with no flooding.

What's interesting was that the native villages in what's now NYC were built on highlands, and it was the Colonizers that pushed to build on the water because it was open land. With all the flooding, turns out the land was open for a reason.
