He is best known for the Emancipation Proclamation and his efforts to preserve the Union, but his presidency was also controversial. Lincoln suspended habeas corpus during the war, allowing some people to be arrested without the usual judicial process, and his administration restricted some forms of dissent and press activity. His views on slavery and race also developed over time, and although he opposed the expansion of slavery and ultimately pushed for its abolition, he did not initially advocate for full racial equality. In the months before his assassination, Lincoln reportedly told others about a disturbing dream in which he saw himself lying dead in the White House.
