October is AAC awareness month, and here is your reminder that AACs are just as important as any other disability aid, and its not as simple as telling someone “just speak”. The videos of the AAC are from my bestie @Marisa who uses an AAC as her primary form of communication. (She is also the one with me in the second to last video) AAC stands for Augmentative Alternative Communication. AAC devices usually look like a tablet or IPad with a large speaker on the back. Most of these devices can only be used to use the AAC app and accessing a search engine. This is the type of AAC used in this video, another type is a device that uses eye tracking to use the words rather than pressing a button, this for people that may not have much function in their limbs. If you want to learn more about AAC Marisa has a great video explaining it using her AAC. VD: The video shows multiple clips of an AAC device which is a gray ipad, the screen is displaying coloured squares with words and pictures on. This is Jess’ friend Marisa’s AAC device. There are also a few clips of Jess (a 19 year old white female with long brown hair) in her pink and black RGK wheelchair when she talks about comparing an AAC to a wheelchair. One of the clips shows Jess and Marisa together, Marisa is a 20 year old white female with long blonde hair, she is sat in a white and black wheelchair with her AAC device on her lap.
