Do not listen to her. Get a good car. Just do it responsibly. Have a good credit and have a hefty down payment so your monthly payments aren’t very much. If you do NEED a car and have bad credit just get the car and refinance it after 8-9 months and get a lower interest rate. Put every spare dollar you have towards that car (principal only payments) and pay it off as fast as you can.
