🚂Did you know that Mount Tamalpais and Muir Woods used to have an excursion train? From 1896 to 1930, a scenic tourist railway (Mount Tamalpais and Muir Woods Railway) operated between the Town of Mill Valley and the east peak of Mount Tamalpais, with a spur line down to Muir Woods National Monument. Known at the Crookedest Railroad in the World, steam trains would push trains upgrade to the summit with a hotel, a restaurant, a dance pavilion, and views of the San Francisco Bay Area. Today, only the breathtaking panoramic views still exist. On the way down, gravity cars would coast down the mountain at a speed of 12 miles per hour. No locomotives at the front. Just the gravityman, who would use breaks and gravity to get the passengers back to Mill Valley. Unfortunately, a fire roared through Mount Tamalpais in 1929, destroying much of the railway. And with the rising popularity of the automobile, rebuilding was not economically feasible. All but one of the original steam engines on this railway have either been wrecked or scrapped. But today you can still visit sites that recognize the significance of the railroad! 🚂The Gravity Car Barn at the Mount Tamalpais summit houses a recreated gravity car and a small museum. (Typically open Saturdays and Sundays, noon-4pm, depending on volunteers) 🚂Much of the former railroad grade is still accessible as hiking paths. 🚂The Mill Valley Depot, now a book store and coffee shop, displays signage dedicated to the railway history with a replica gravity car sitting in the plaza. 🚂Heisler Locomotive Works Engine No. 9–the only surviving engine from the railroad—is currently being displayed at the California State Railroad Museum after years of refurbishment by volunteers. @CSRM #railfan #railfansoftiktok #trainmuseum #traintok #mounttamalpais
