The Girl Behind the Glasses The university conference room was unusually quiet. Six students sat along one side of the long table, presentation folders neatly arranged in front of them. The dean sat at the head of the table beside Mrs. Anderson. Across from them sat the woman everyone had been talking about. Lena Schuett. Miu still couldn’t believe she was actually here. She stood outside the closed conference-room door, holding her folder against her chest. Her fingers were cold. Her heart was beating far too quickly. She could hear voices through the door. She took a slow breath. “It’s just a presentation.” Another breath. “Just answer the questions.” Another. “Don’t embarrass yourself.” She adjusted her glasses. Then the door opened. “Miss Miu?” Miu looked up. Mrs. Anderson smiled warmly. “You’re next.” Miu swallowed. “Okay.” She stepped inside. The moment she entered, she felt everyone’s eyes turn toward her. Her friends were sitting near the back of the observation area. Bam gave her two thumbs up. Lingling mouthed, You got this. Oom smiled encouragingly. Miu almost smiled back. Then her eyes moved to the other side of the table. And stopped. The woman from the parking lot. The beautiful woman in the white suit. Miu’s stomach dropped. Oh. She’s the person I’m presenting to. She hadn’t known. She suddenly wished she had. Maybe then she could have prepared herself for the way Lena Schuett looked at her. Lena sat completely still. Her glasses rested low on the bridge of her nose, and one hand was placed beside a closed notebook. She didn’t smile. She didn’t look intimidating on purpose. She simply had a presence that made the entire room feel smaller. Miu looked away quickly. “Please, take your seat,” the dean said. Miu sat down. “Miss Miu, before you begin, I’d like to introduce you formally.” The dean gestured toward Lena. “This is Ms. Lena Schuett, CEO of Schuett International and the primary sponsor of our university’s new internship program.” Miu’s eyes widened slightly. So this was Lena Schuett. The woman whose name was practically everywhere. The woman who had never personally attended a university sponsorship meeting before. Lena gave a small nod. “Good morning.” Her voice was calm. Deep. Controlled. Miu’s heart did something extremely inconvenient. Miu gave a polite nod Lena looked at her. For some reason, she didn’t immediately look away. Then the dean turned toward Miu. “You may begin.” Miu stood. She walked to the screen and connected her laptop. Her hands trembled slightly. She tried not to show it. The first slide appeared. SCHUETT INTERNATIONAL — UNIVERSITY INTERNSHIP PROPOSAL Miu turned toward the room. She took one final breath. “Good morning.” Her voice was soft. Lena’s eyes lifted from the folder in front of her. It was the first time she’d heard Miu speak. And something about that voice made her pause. It wasn’t loud. It wasn’t confident in the traditional sense. But it was gentle. Clear. Careful. Lena found herself listening. Miu continued. “My name is Miu Meg Natasha, and I’m here to present my proposal for the secondary assistant internship position.” Her fingers stopped shaking. As she moved through her presentation, something changed. The shy girl from the parking lot disappeared. Miu explained her ideas clearly. She discussed how she would organize Lena’s schedule, improve communication between departments, assist with research, manage documents, and help coordinate university and company projects. She had researched Schuett International extensively. Not just the company. Lena herself. She knew Lena had expanded the company into several international markets. She knew about the Canadian division. She knew about recent changes in the company’s internship structure. She even had suggestions for improving the program. Lena slowly leaned back in her chair. Interesting. Very interesting. Miu reached the final slide. “Ultimately, I believe an assistant shouldn’t simply complete tasks.” She looked around the room. “They should understand why the task matters.” Lena’s fingers stopped moving. Miu continued.
