the no-logs audits are done by securitum but proton is literally the one paying for the audit lol, doesn’t mean they’re lying but it’s not some random watchdog showing up unannounced, it’s more like a hired inspector. also swiss privacy laws are strong rn but there’s a new surveillance law called VUPF that might pass in switzerland, if that happens the whole “swiss jurisdiction = untouchable” thing could shift, so def keep an eye on that. and here’s the part that actually matters a lot. proton vpn and proton mail are NOT the same thing security wise. proton vpn’s track record is genuinely clean, 458 legal orders since 2017 and they literally had nothing to hand over every single time bc they don’t log period. proton mail is a different story tho, they did hand over an IP address of a french climate activist back in 2021 after swiss court forced them to, dude got arrested after that. the actual email content was never touched bc it’s encrypted and proton literally can’t read it even if they wanted to, but metadata like IP and login times is a different battle and they will comply if a swiss judge orders it. so tldr the “proton got someone arrested” story you might’ve seen is about mail, not vpn, don’t mix them up. i accept that mullvad vpn is safer than proton but that doesn’t mean proton isn’t no log or that it sucks #opsec #mullvad #protonvpn #cybersecurity
