UNTOLD STORY OF WHY EDO Onogies WANTED TO UNSEAT THE OBA OF BENIN FEBRUARY 1992 Come, let me take you back to February 21–27, 1992. Edo State was barely six months old. Bendel State had only just been divided into Edo and Delta in August 1991, and the new traditional council was still finding its feet. Then a memo shook the palace. According to the report, the disagreement began after the Oba of Benin informed the other traditional rulers of his intention to include the Iyasere of Benin and two other clan heads from his domain as members of the Edo State Council of Obas. Some of the other Obas objected. A written protest was reportedly sent, with copies going to the Presidency and the Oba of Benin. But when Vintage People visited Ekpoma, one of the traditional rulers who had signed the protest said the matter was never meant for public consumption and that the protest had already been withdrawn after an intervention. The Onogie of Ijagbe, however, was more direct. He questioned how chiefs could sit in a council meant for Obas, arguing that the Obas were the traditional heads while chiefs were their subjects. The Benin Palace responded through the Iyasere, Chief S. Ighodaro, who described the attempt to remove the Oba of Benin as almost impossible. Under his photograph, the magazine carried a powerful statement: Iyasere boasts: It’s impossible because God made Omo ’N’ Oba the head. One of the chiefs reportedly named as a possible member of the council also told the magazine that he was not aware of the controversy and had no intention of becoming a traditional ruler. He further defended the position of the Oba of Benin, describing him as a paramount traditional ruler. Reading this page today, you can see that the argument was bigger than one protest letter. It was about authority. Who qualifies to sit on a council of Obas? What was the place of chiefs within the new Edo State traditional structure? And what exactly was the position of the Oba of Benin in relation to the other traditional rulers? All of this was being debated in 1992, only months after the creation of Edo State. And look closely at the bottom of the page. There is even an advertisement for ANTEPAR, a Piperazine brand advertised for getting rid of roundworms, selling for N6.81k. Even the advertisements are part of the history. Today, the Oba of Benin remains the permanent chairman of the Edo State Council of Traditional Rulers and Chiefs. But in February 1992, the question of his position at the head of the council was clearly being contested. This is why we archive. Did you know about this 1992 dispute? And do you remember Chief S. Ighodaro, the Iyasefe pictured here? Heart 2 Heart With Sammy Source: Vintage People, February 21–27, 1992, Page 6 By: Ayodo Bamidele
