@drkatie_md: Postpartum psychosis is a rare but serious psychiatric emergency, affecting approximately 1–2 in every 1,000 births. It most often develops in the first days to weeks after delivery and can include severe insomnia, confusion, paranoia, delusions, hallucinations, and significant changes in mood or behavior. One reason postpartum psychosis can be difficult to recognize is that symptoms can wax and wane, and early symptoms like anxiety, agitation, irritability, or insomnia can overlap with more common postpartum experiences. But postpartum psychosis is very different from postpartum depression or intrusive thoughts. It involves a loss of contact with reality and requires immediate psychiatric evaluation and treatment. Families are often the first to notice changes in behavior, especially because people experiencing postpartum psychosis may lack insight into their symptoms as part of the illness. #maternalmentalhealth #postpartummentalhealth #postpartumdepression #postpartumpsychosis #reproductivepsychiatry
