@scientificamerican: Take a look at newly discovered marine life from the deep waters of Trinidad and Tobago. During the country’s first locally led deep-sea expedition, scientists spotted at least 20 suspected new species—including an octopus first seen more than a decade ago. With the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s remotely operated vehicle SuBastian, they uncovered more than 25 “cold seep” ecosystems, which are systems that support marine life, including mussels, clams and tubeworms, through chemosynthetic bacteria that harness chemical energy from the seafloor instead of sunlight. These everyday items are making your kitchen TOXIC! 🧼🍳☠️ 1️⃣ Traditional yellow sponges 🧽: These sponges can harbor up to 45 BILLION bacteria per cm² (and up to 362 different species of those bacteria and other microorganisms)!
👉 That’s like rubbing a petri dish on your plate and then eating off of it, which can lead to gut health issues like gut dysbiosis, digestion problems, and more!
✅ Instead of sponges, switch to 100% natural loofah scrubbers. 2️⃣ Anything with Teflon (especially pans, skillets, and air fryers): It's not just the nonstick coating flakes that get into your food... 👉 When heated over 500°F, teflon and nonstick coatings release toxic forever chemicals into your air (which can lead to the dreaded “Teflon Flu” with flu-like symptoms and even hospitalization).
✅ Instead of Teflon, switch to carbon steel or stainless steel instead. 3️⃣ Plastic cutting boards (and more): The biggest problem is the microplastics. Plastic cutting boards can release millions of microplastics that can end up in your body EVERY TIME YOU USE THEM!
👉 Black plastic kitchen items are no better: These are often made from recycled e-waste (so many can end up releasing toxic compounds like flame retardants & formaldehyde when you use them).
✅ Instead of plastic cutting boards and utensils, switch to 100% solid wood (but make sure they are free of toxic coatings). With proper care, these wood kitchen items will stay beautiful for years (and happen to be naturally antimicrobial). #kitchentips #kitchenitems #cookingtips #healthhacks #nontoxicliving
