@nbcwashington: Time is running out for roughly 170,000 Salvadorans living in the U.S. with Temporary Protected Status, or TPS. Their protections from deportation and ability to work legally in the country are set to expire in one week. Daysi Gonzalez said she came to the U.S. as a toddler and her family qualified for TPS after an earthquake hit El Salvador. She's been documenting the uncertainty she faces as TPS is set to expire on Sept. 9. In one video she posted on Instagram, she explains her options are to “self-deport or risk everything that I’ve built here.” "I think, at the moment, it really is desperation," Gonzalez told News4. "It would upend everything. I'm a homeowner. I am a partner at a political consulting firm. You know, a lot of people depend on me and it would just completely upend the lives of so many people." Learn more about why Gonzalez and other advocates for TPS were on Capitol Hill on Wednesday at the link in bio. #TPS #elsalvador #salvi #immigration #washingtondc

El Salvador is safer than the US. Why do they need to claim asylum?

*Temporary (adjective) means lasting, existing, serving, or effective for a limited time only; not permanent.

It is not getting extended. El Salvador is the safest country in this hemisphere. Can't see how another 18 months does anything

Give these people residency. They have been vetted yearly through background checks and biometrics each time they reapply for the status. It is cruel and ridiculous to send them back when they have integrated into the US and have built lives here.

TPS should’ve been expired years ago. That country is objectively safer than most of the world now, including several major cities in the USA

Saying that you are a "homeowner" in a country with a severe shortage of housing that is nearly impossible to afford isnt the best idea.
