The hot water supply is off to the house. The hot water valve in the shower is on. When the lav faucet is being turned on in the middle position, it is opening the hot and cold water supply at the same time allowing the cold water to back feed into the hot supply and out the shower where the hot valve is on. My guess anyway

Looks like you had a electrician do the plumbing. He set it up as a 3 way switch so it turns on from another location too.
