@ryanmitchell.co: Emotional intelligence sounds like a talent. It is simpler than that, and you can hear it in one sentence. It goes: that came out wrong, what I meant was this. That is the whole test. Not how calm somebody is. Not how well they read a room. How fast they can get to asking for a restart while something is still going badly. Most people cannot. Not because they are cold. Because a restart requires admitting you were wrong about something, and whether you can afford to be wrong depends entirely on where you are standing. Watch somebody who is not sure of their place at work. They cannot back down in an argument, ever, about anything. It looks like ego. It is arithmetic. If being wrong once can cost them the room, they will keep defending a point they stopped believing in earlier that same meeting. Now watch somebody whose place is not in question. They give up ground easily. They say you are right about that part. It looks generous. It is not generosity. It is simply cheap for them. So when you meet the person who says I am fine with being wrong, you are not looking at a character trait. You are looking at somebody with enough ground underneath them that a mistake does not move them off it. You can point the same test at yourself, and this is the part worth keeping. Notice which arguments you cannot walk away from. Those are the rooms where you are standing on very little, and the argument is almost never about the thing being argued. That is also the useful direction. You do not get better at this by studying it. You get better at it by standing somewhere the truth is affordable. ... Think of the last argument you refused to leave. Then ask what being wrong would have cost you in that particular room.
