@earthdiscovered: Where Women Could Learn: An animated map of Europe showing, country by country, the first year women were admitted to study for a university degree. The counter runs from 1678 to 1948. Each country fills gold in the year it opened. One metric is used throughout — first admission to degree study — so no entry mixes in girls' schooling, entrance exams, or separate women's certificates. Italy 1678 is an outlier and is marked as such: Elena Cornaro Piscopia received a doctorate at Padua by dispensation, alone, and no second woman followed for 189 years. The first real opening was Zurich in 1867. The last of the ancient universities to grant women full degrees was Cambridge, in 1948 — 270 years after Padua. Countries shown in dim gold at the end are open to women but carry no compiled date in this timeline. Dark grey means no date compiled — not that women were barred. Dates marked ~ are contested between sources. #womenrights #education #earthdiscovered #europe #womenownedbusiness
