The cotton club is LITERALLY down the street. Manhattanville and Morningside heights is BS, it’s Harlem.

Columbia is completely at fault. In part bc they don’t encourage their students to engage with the Harlem community (the culture, the food, the businesses). Instead they act as though the neighborhood is scary and to be avoided. So well off students rent out and displace communities, and then never work to learn what the community has to offer

i live in the washington heights area & columbia is currently buying buildings in for students & actively kicking residents out so they can own the entire building. people aren’t talking about this enough & it makes me so upset because even if you’re paying people to leave, that’s not something that should be okay.

I read a book called “in the shadow of the ivory tower: how universities plunder cities” in college a lot of universities benefit off the displacement of black and brown ppl

Yes, Columbia had an impact in the change of the neighborhood. However, Harlem community board was well aware of this. Since 2010 the Harlem community board had plans from east to west to “revise” Harlem.

A girl I know lives in a building where there’s only Columbia University students. We are both from Harlem and are in our 40s. Her family are the only Black people that live there. The entire block is like that and I mean the entire four corners. That’s about 20 buildings with no black residence. Let that sink in

I worked at Mt Sinai when it was St Lukes Roosevelt 2014-2016. They absolutely bought up everything and raised the stores/restaurants rent on places that were around for decades. Columbia & NYU have basically become tax free real estate agents

I read an article that much of that money given to city council from Columbia was mismanaged and spent on things that did not benefit the community. I’ll find it and post a link.

Native Harlemite here. I hate Columbia for what they did. And now they are pushing further uptown.

Also the apartments in Harlem started to bank on student roommates renting rooms at $1000+ so affordable apartments for families were now more expensive and promoted to students. And the new builds are making apartments much smaller for students / new grads/ roommates. Harlem natives who are now adults and starting a family struggle to stay or are priced out.

Columbia is currently trying to take residence out their apartments to lease those same exact apartments to College students mine the apartments are not even safe enough for the tenants that they lease it to anyways so it just doesn’t make any sense to me

Eminent domain... I feel like you were a big charitable by saying there wasn't necessarily a causal relationship between the gentrification and Columbia's campus expansion
