I don’t understand why people don’t want to interrogate socialization, on this app it’s always men/women are inherently like this or that it almost feels like folks are using terms to sound…smart or something.

THANK YOU! People keep calling me bioessentialist when talking about learned behaviours unless I specifically give a disclaimer in big bold letters.

i fear bio essentialism has become a buzzword gonna be a hot take but has kinda been the woke version of not all men there are people who use it and know what they’re talking about then there’s people who think you saying men are socialized a certain way is bio essentialism

it’s so funny when people who just learned what bioessentialism is, think socialization is same as that😂

yea critiquing culture is super important and requires for us to at times paint with a broad brush but it shouldn't be attributed to some innate quality in an identity group

You can criticize everything in a man. What you can't do, is say he does it because it's inherent to being a man

1000% this man ran up on me trynna hug me at Walmart 😬 I was very attracted to him, and when he initially approached he was incredibly polite. we exchanged numbers and he said some "so you remember me" and came in fast. I know he thought he was being smooth but it was scary. I awkwardly smiled the whole time even when I jumped backwards. I told him later that this moment was not a strong one, but I can acknowledge that there was nothing in my performance nor in the performance of many in society that has indicated that such behavior was completely not okay. because everybody, me included, is trained to smile and make him feel comfortable. 🐰

I also think as well as boys just learning it’s socially acceptable, they also learn that it’s something they want to do in the first place. As in your likes don’t come from nowhere, so when they’re taught aggressive things are fun (which every hobby considered masculine is, like violence in video games, sports and cars) that’s also a societal, toxic masculinity issue not a biological one, nurture not nature

had people argue with me when i said cis men are objectively more unsafe than cis women (when talking about cis people in trans spaces). they said i was being bioessentialist even when highlighting that they are a danger to transfems and that it was a learned behavior through the patriarchy.

it also excuses men and absolves them of any accountability when we say that those traits are inherent to men. if we act like men are incapable of being better then they are never prompted to self-reflect and improve their behavior

It’s the same reason they say boys are easy and girls want not bc they are but bc they don’t feel a need to really parent them

Men are like that because it is beneficial for them as a Class, Men are not defined by Biology they are defined by Class Interests (this is why it's possible for Trans Men to have Male Privilege)

i think this also makes things worse because people use bioessentialist ideas on large but smaller groups so they feel it's ok to believe something is inherit (Ex. the middle east is Islam and because Islam is bad then the middle east is bad. China is Communist, black people being gang bangers), as like bioessentialist these people don't actually want to see people as people who are also raised in society , they just want to be mad at something that's easy to digest and regurgitate.
