"we value in-person collaboration" is in every one of these memos. never comes with a collaboration budget, just a longer commute for you.

Bonnie, what’s your opinion on how people can become specialized if a lot of companies just wanted tenured employees.

I spent almost 10 years working there. It was amazing at the beginning and an example of the hope tech had for the future. Now this tech company, like most other tech firms, really are just a shell of their past. Working in tech just isnt respectful or admirable anymore.

yes let’s get rid of entry level hiring and destroy our talent pipelines and only poach season professionals for 5+ years while every other company does the same thing! This totally will not create any serious labor deficits that we won’t have the money or time to invest in training cost to fix in a couple of years🤩🤩🤩

I was laid off from a different tech company after 6 years today, and I’d never even lost a job before. I’m absolutely devastated. There was a PE buyout and watching it get destroyed then getting caught up in the destruction is just 😭😭😭 and multiple years went down to one HR person reading from a script and not caring.

I think you’re correct about these companies’ leadership intentions but I think these changes 1. Will drive interesting people out of tech and 2. Won’t actually bear out the efficiency and savings they’re aiming for. Maybe longer term the industry will just look very different, or maybe they’ll even walk these decisions back.

The RTO/hub thing is an excuse for downsizing. Let's be real. My last comoany did layoffs 3 weeks after RTO because not enough people quit.

This trend will likely last for a few years and then fall as companies realise structures don’t work. For Uber autonomous taxis only work if they become much cheaper than a normal driven taxi if not there’s no point and they would be making super profits while the cost to society is high.

Why not cover the strategic choices management got wrong? Surely that has contributed to the need for layoffs.

One thing to also flag is the companies not laying off are doing rebandings and freezing promotions

it's not just the pandemic though - even before that tech companies were known as one of the last good employers due to benefits, flexibility, and just having modern and egalitarian ideals. it's debatable if it really was so but they were at least seen as modern and vibrant workplaces. feels like all that is in the past now.

I don’t think so. There’s competition coming to big tech. And remote work is a way to incentivize. Also, these companies are immoral.

Or - you can organize with your community to try and get regulations to prevent this bs. It will take a significant amount of time, but we don’t have to just shut up and take this

You really nailed it at the end. The tech sector is fundamentally not a stable sector and has never been structured as such. The incentives imposed on it by the market it uses to fund itself is inherently illiquid and unstable.
