Mr. Robinson is absolutely right about Lincoln’s place as the greatest president, and he’s equally right about the inflated rankings of FDR and Wilson. Perhaps their policies fit the needs of their own moment in history, but many of those programs simply aren’t viable or necessary today. Yet countless people still cling to those outdated ideas, using them to bind individuals to the will of other individuals rather than to enduring principles. That’s the real danger — trading self‑governance for dependence on systems long past their expiration date.
