@mauinuivenison: The mynas squawking outside the window. The plumeria strung into thousands and thousands of lei. The rice birds that got so bad Punaluʻu and Hanalei had to raise armies to save the loʻi laiki. One man to thank. Dr. Wilhelm Hillebrand. Kauka Hilabarani. In 1865 he sailed from Honolulu to Hong Kong on immigration business and started shipping things back. Plants. Birds. And then…deer. Kamehameha IV and V’s private physician. Queen’s Hospital’s first chief physician. Board of Health, Privy Council, Bureau of Immigration. He also wrote one of the earliest English books on Hawaiian plants, counting 999 species and realizing three out of every four grew nowhere else on earth (after introducing hundreds of non-native and many times invasive species to this rarified place). Whatever we might think of him, with nearly two centuries of hindsight on our side, there is no changing how much Hillebrand changed Hawai’i, forever. History of Hawaiʻi’s Deer, Episode 1 and 2.
