Stop growing alfalfa for China. Problem solved. We waste water growing dry, compressed alfalfa bales to sell to China and we are draining the Colorado River to do it. Just stop doing that.

I think this is a rare case where eminent domain would actually have a justifiable public good purpose. Those farms could developed for commercial and residential that produce far more value while the farmers would be compensated. It's far from perfect. I can imagine dozens of issues, but water really is a finite resource.

A lot of good points made here. However, there is a strong basis for protecting agriculture. If anything disrupts international trade, you need to be able to continue to grow enough food to feed everyone.

Caring about this issue caused me to do an sizable amount of research, I found one thing that really blew me away. All of that “central planning“ that you are correct to criticize was based on an unobtainable constant. Rainfall, snowpack, River levels and Lake Mead, The Colorado and all sources were at a statistical Highpoint when they decided the numbers. They knew this at the time and for some reason here we are, mother nature living her best life with cycles of highs and lows no adjustments have been made!

We export alfalfa so other countries can feed their livestock. Meaning we literally EXPORT OUR WATER. All these people whining about data centers are clueless about actual water use

Water rights and usage in the West is a horrible entanglement of overlapping concerns and regulations. But it seems that you dismiss the importance of food security in this issue. Societies need food and shelter to survive. Almost everything else we consume is extra.
