I’ll never forget the day that my son was asked to go and hang out at the mall. I dropped him off, he was 14. He was so excited and two hours later he called me to come pick him up and I asked him if he had a nice time and he said yes, but on the way home, he said Mom I lied to you. Nobody showed up and I was too embarrassed to call you so I just walked around the mall for two hours and I had some McDonald’s. Now he’s 22 and has a bunch of friends, but I’ll never forget that day. He felt so alone.

When my son was younger, he was acting out a little at school, so I went to visit his classroom to observe how he was doing without letting him know I was there. During recess, I watched him go outside and get on the swings by himself. Then he went and kicked a ball around by himself. I was trying not to interact with him because I wanted to watch him in his own element. One of the playground staff came up to me and asked if I was a social worker there to observe one of the children. I pointed to my son and asked, “That little boy over there... does he always play by himself?” She said, “Yes. He always plays alone. Nobody ever wants to play with him.” Then she asked me, “Are you here to observe him?” I said, “No... I’m his mother.” The look on her face immediately changed. She looked completely surprised and shocked, like she suddenly realized what she had just told me. I could tell she felt awful. I went over to the swings and started pushing my son while tears streamed down my face. I remember telling him, “It won’t always be this way. When you get older, you’re going to have so many friends.” And now he does🥹🙏🏽💜 But I will never forget the way he looked that day or the way I felt watching my little boy play all by himself. Talk to your kids. Pay attention. Ask them about their friendships and their hearts. And most importantly, make sure they always know they have a friend in you.

Im 28 with no friends and honestly im okay with that grew up with hardly any friends because i spoke a dying language that no one knew other than my parents and it was hard so its okay keep your head up
