In 1873, a ship called the Lalla Rookh left Calcutta carrying 410 Indian labourers. Many of them didn't know where they were going. Some were told they were headed on a pilgrimage to a holy place called "Sri Ram." Only 399 survived the three-month crossing across the Atlantic. Over the next 43 years, more than 34,000 Indians made that same journey — mostly from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar — to work five-year contracts on Dutch sugar and coffee plantations they never asked to be part of. Here's the part that gets me every time: about a third of them eventually sailed back home. But the rest stayed. Not because it was easy — because the Dutch offered land and a small bonus to anyone who did. And instead of scattering as individuals, they rebuilt entire villages. Together. They kept their language alive — a new dialect called Sarnami Hindustani, built to hold onto Bhojpuri thousands of miles from where it was born. They kept Diwali. They kept the food. They kept each other. And then in 1975, when Suriname became independent, thousands of Hindustanis packed up and crossed the ocean again — this time to the Netherlands. A community that had already survived one forced migration chose to migrate a second time, voluntarily, and still call itself Indian on the other side. Every June 5th, they mark Prawas Din — the exact date their ancestors' ship first landed. Not a festival borrowed from India. One they built themselves, out of memory. If your family's story runs through an indenture ship — Fiji, Trinidad, Guyana, Mauritius, Suriname — you already know this feeling. The specific ache of being from somewhere your passport doesn't say. This is the part of Indian history that never makes it into textbooks. Not the ones who left. The ones who never really let go. Tag someone whose family history you think might trace back to one of these ships.
