Just a reminder that being depressed, stressed, angry or overwhelmed with everything that’s happening in the world right now is a completely sane and reasonable response. Don’t let anyone convince you otherwise.

I'm autistic and this world wasn't meant for the way my brain works. I've never been "well adjusted" in this society.

The best "mental health" outcomes under oppression come from resistance, not resilience or assimilation. You can't have self-esteem or self-directed action without standing up for yourself and your community. And long-term, without liberation!!

you seem to confuse the terms normal and healthy. normal refers to averages, it correlates to group think, social norms, etc which is not the same as healthy

I’ve found becoming aware of how truly unjust our society is means for most the ability to function declines. I wonder if people with already fragile or nonexistent support systems are more likely to recognize systemic issues, due to being pushed to ask why. Then they discover the sickness in society and just give up on the idea of maintaining their well being because of how overwhelming the situation is. And due to their decreased capacity to function, they aren’t believed when they try to point out these systemic flaws and are told to “stop blaming” things outside their control. Which just adds to the isolation and begins the spiral down towards increasing poor mental and physical health

One of my first questions for my current therapist was, What are your thoughts on capitalism? Her answer without a moment’s hesitation: “That sometimes people need universal basic income more than therapy.” Been with her for almost 2 years.

This opens up so much. Going a little deeper, western psychology is built on concepts created by old white men from many years ago, not taking into consideration the reality of the needs of women or people of color. An current time when people are trying to do more psychological research about women or people of color, they have to do double the research because they have to first do research of primarily Whiteman to see what comes of that research then they have to do secondary research of women and or people of color and compare the two in order for it to be considered valid. It was only just recently that transgender identification stopped being considered “abnormal“ to the point that many people still try to say that transgender people are just mentally ill. Digging deeper still, there are many societies that consider people who by western psychological standards would be diagnosed with bipolar or other similar “illnesses“ to be special gifts from God/gods. I’ve come to the realization that Western psychology is truly about trying to fit everyone into these neat little boxes that were created by White men then we wonder why there are so many people who have “abnormal” diagnoses.

a normal person in psychology is akin to the rational actor in economic theory....they don't exist and are simply used to make things simple

It's interesting that all those traits of a well adjusted person are functioning and behavioural signs. None ask what the lived experience of the "well adjusted person" is. I wonder what the Venn diagram of "well adjusted" and "happiness" looks like.

personally I think somebody is psychologically healthy when they are capable of recognizing their needs, and is willing to take action to ensure that those needs are met, the person has empathy and can understand when somebody else is needs are not met and the person is able to identify unjust situations and fight for fairness and equity full stop the person is healthy when they can do this without harming others or themselves. that's just my perspective as a trainee psychotherapist at the moment.
