@devon.momlife: I want to talk about the windows—specifically, the dark ones. I want to talk about what happens in the middle of a night feed when your eyes drift toward the glass. They go there the way eyes do when they desperately need a place to land that isn’t the ceiling, isn’t the baby, and isn't the inside of your own head. You look at the house across the street, and its windows are pitch black. The ones three doors down are dark. As far as you can see from where you sit, every single pane of glass is dead and silent. You don't ask to process this information. You don't choose to draw a conclusion. But the truth arrives anyway—fully formed, heavy, and absolute: Everyone is asleep. Not just on your street, but everywhere. The sleeping world stretches outward from your room in every direction until you are the only lit point in an infinite dark. The baby is the sole reason for the light, and the light is the proof of your total isolation. I didn't know until I saw the map that the windows had been lying to me the entire time. Not maliciously—windows can only reflect what sits directly in front of them. What was in front of them was the outside of silent houses, the cold glass, the neutral face homes wear when the people inside have moved into the quiet, inner rooms to feed their babies—rooms where the light never reaches the street. The light was always inside the houses. It was just hidden from the glass. The map finally showed me what the windows couldn't: every single home with a mother sitting in a quiet, interior room, holding a baby under a lamp that never reached the outside world. The neighborhood was never dark. We were never alone. #postpartum #newmom #postpartumsupport #momtok #fourthtrimester
