@low.iron.living: Save this as your low iron checklist—because getting your levels under control requires more than simply taking an iron supplement. 1. Confirm the deficiency with the right bloodwork: a CBC plus ferritin, serum iron, TIBC and transferrin saturation. Hemoglobin shows whether you’re anemic, while ferritin helps show how much stored iron you have. 2. Create an iron routine you can follow consistently. Taking iron with an orange or another vitamin C-rich food may support iron absorption and can be easier than taking it on a completely empty stomach. Try to separate it from coffee, tea, dairy, calcium and magnesium. 3. Investigate why your iron became low. Possible causes include heavy periods, gastrointestinal blood loss, pregnancy, blood donation, recent surgery, low iron intake or difficulty absorbing iron because of celiac disease, H. pylori, gastritis, inflammatory bowel disease or previous stomach surgery. 4. Ask which additional tests make sense for you. Depending on your symptoms, that could include CRP, B12, folate, a celiac panel, H. pylori testing, urinalysis, a gynecological evaluation or a gastrointestinal evaluation. 5. Schedule follow-up bloodwork. If your ferritin, iron saturation or hemoglobin aren’t improving, the next questions should be: Am I still losing iron? Am I absorbing my supplement? Is my treatment strong enough—or should I ask about an iron infusion? Save this video so you can come back to the bloodwork and questions before your next appointment. Were you ever given a reason for your iron deficiency, or were you just told to take iron? I've had more than 20 infusions. Should be getting another one sometime soon. I am also doing daily B12 injections. Celiac disease and super heavy periods are two things that have caused my anemia and B12 deficiency. I wasn't diagnosed with celiac disease until my mid 40's so I have a lot of damage done to my intestines. Trying my best to consume as much iron as I can as well as taking gentle iron. It is the only oral supplement of iron I can take. Oh, also beef liver capsules.
