The cervical spine is the most mobile segment of the axial skeleton. It facilitates the articulation of the skull with the torso and enables complex multi-axial movements, driven by the unique anatomy of the upper cervical vertebrae — the atlas (C1) and the axis (C2). The clinical 3D model demonstrates the precise biomechanics of the craniovertebral junction and the cervical spine. During head extension (tilting backward) followed by axial rotation (turning), the coordinated mechanics of the intervertebral joints are clearly visualized. The atlanto-occipital joint primarily facilitates flexion and extension (nodding), while the atlanto-axial joint rotates around the dens (odontoid process) of the axis, governing rotational head movements. The subaxial cervical vertebrae (C3–C7) exhibit smooth gliding within the zygapophyseal (facet) joints, optimally distributing mechanical stress. #orthopedics #vertebrology #anatomy #biomechanics #spine
