My mother had very strong feelings about what she wanted for end of life. Unfortunately when she was diagnosed with dementia she didn't believe the diagnosis. Her thinking process was already compromised. So for example she was on heart medication, she was aware enough she didn't want to be off of her heart medication because it scared her when she started having afib. She always said if she had to be in a nursing home she would just stop eating so she could exit. And she would have a moment when she thought that's what I'm doing and then she would say oh look cake. Planning is good but the best laid plans...

I love this because I plan on the not feeding thing. My mom has been being fed for 3 years now and if she had known she could have done a directive I am sure she would have. She is suffering so but the nursing home is still feeding 😞

My grandfather had one of these and the family ignored it. He suffered for months. What’s the point of them if the family can ignore it?

I’m a hospice nurse. I made a detailed video for my family and care team (I also filled out advanced directives living will etc) I wanted the staff caring for me to be able to see me as the person I am before the disease. I made a QR code stamped it on a little silver pendant and wear it on a necklace.

Rn here. Same. I have told family and friends once I can no longer make my own decisions I am comfortable care only. No antibiotics. Even for just a UTI. Let it go.

Yes. Yes. Yes. We discussed this at a Death Cafe I facilitated recently. I could literally see lightbulbs going off and one woman said “How many of you are wanting to update your advance directives right now!?!?” The ‘do not feed’ is HUGE

I take care of a friend with dementia. I wrote down her favorite movies and tv shows so she can watch them again for the first time. I also have a list of her favorite foods so she doesn’t have to think about what to eat. Especially finger foods! They’re less of a stressful choice for her.

With both my Mom and Mother in law, they believe nothing is wrong with them and deny their symptoms. So they are unable to have this conversation since they believe they are perfectly fine.
