Authorities in Ho Chi Minh City are investigating a viral video showing a street coconut seller allegedly overcharging foreign tourists in the city center. According to the video, two tourists handed over 500,000 VND for one coconut and received only 170,000 VND back - meaning they were reportedly charged 330,000 VND for one coconut. Other tourists in the video were reportedly quoted different prices, ranging from 60,000 VND for one coconut to 200,000 VND for two. The man was also seen repeatedly approaching foreign tourists, encouraging them to carry his coconut baskets and then trying to sell them coconuts. Police in Bến Thành and Sài Gòn wards are now verifying the incident. I’ve personally seen this guy around District 1 myself, especially around the Independence Palace area. So if you’re visiting Saigon and happen to see him, be careful. Always ask the price BEFORE accepting or buying anything, and if something doesn’t feel right, simply walk away. This is not a reflection of Vietnam or the many honest, hardworking street vendors here. Unfortunately, tourist scams can happen anywhere, and a little awareness goes a long way.
